I'm delighted to be taking part in the Halloween blog blitz for Do Bugs Need Shoes? by Addie Broussard and Anthony Puttee. Many thanks to the authors and Rachel Gilbey of Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me and for my digital copy of the book.

Halloween is the time of year when the creepy or scary is celebrated and for many people, bugs would fall into that category. However, the bugs in Do Bugs Wear Shoes? are just so appealing, I can't see anybody having nightmares about them? This beautifully illustrated book includes vibrant cartoons as well as actual photos of bugs and its eye-catching design is sure to appeal to young children.
The book explores some of the sorts of questions children may ask about bugs and this irreverent approach certainly makes it stand out when compared to more traditional non-fiction books for children. They can learn about bugs in space, bugs at school, bug dances and no book for curious youngsters would be complete without some bug poop facts! With links to videos of some of the topics covered (don't miss the spider dancing to YMCA !) and a chance to vote on the world's most beautiful bug extends the book beyond the pages and the website also includes educational activities for parents and teachers to download.
Although the approach to the book is fun, the authors don't patronise their young readers who will learn about the definition of entomology, bioluminescence and the scientific classification of insects as well as seeing some fantastic bug selfies and lookalike photos. I read the book with my daughter who recently turned 11 and she enjoyed discovering new facts about bugs but said she felt the colourful design of the book would most likely appeal to younger children. She also commented that hyperlinks to the videos would have been useful in the digital version of the book.

Do Bugs Wear Shoes? will hopefully help children realise that bugs and insects are fascinating, not frightening. I would recommend it as a classroom resource for primary schools and for parents with children who are interested in learning more about bugs.

About the Authors
Two Umbrellas is an educational publishing company that fuses education and storytelling.  We offer books and activities to help parents and educators empower tomorrow’s leaders.
Our founders, Anthony Puttee and Addie Broussard, love to travel.  Anthony’s favorite trip was to Antarctica and he has included some of his personal photos in this book.  Addie has traveled solo around the world. While in Portugal, she encountered a unique insect, which inspired a children’s book called The Beedog, which was published in 2018. The idea for Do Bugs Wear Shoes came from a playful team meeting on a rooftop in Mexico.
